Lionesses win NEP Sport TV Moment of the Year at Broadcast Sports Awards
The winner of the 'NEP Sport TV Moment of the Year' voted by the Broadcast Sport readers, was won by the BBC's coverage of the England Women's team after their historic UEFA Women's Euro 2022 win, which concluded a iconic summer of women's football.
In England’s first major tournament win since the FIFA World Cup in 1966, football finally came home thanks to a Chloe Kelly goal in extra-time at Wembley Stadium. A home tournament has inspired a generation of girls to take part in the beautiful game, with the viewing figures and attendances for the games breaking countless records.
NEP is proud to be the official sponsor of the Broadcast Sport Awards 2022. Simon Moorhead, MD NEP UK presented the award on the night with England legend Alex Scott among those to collect the award on the night. The former Arsenal captain was a presenter for the BBC throughout the tournament including the final played at Wembley.
NEP Sport Moment of the Year marks the most memorable sporting moments of the year, brought to millions of TVs around the world by broadcasters. This summer Sarina Wiegman’s squad captured the imagination of the country, as England hosted and won the women’s European championships, and so it's no surprise that the BBC's coverage of this historical event, was voted for as the NEP Sport TV Moment of the Year.
Following the conclusion of the quarterfinals, where the Lionesses overcame Spain in extra time, it was confirmed that this summer’s tournament has produced more viewers than any previous edition of the UEFA Women’s EURO. This was achieved with three games left to play: the two semi-finals and the final. The previous cumulative total audience record, of 164m was set at the last edition in the Netherlands in 2019. Records were broken with live audiences too. Stadium MK hosted four games, including the semi-final between Germany and France – which holds the record for the highest attendance at Women’s Euros semi-final not involving the host nation.
